Pt. Dume Marine Science Elementary School Self-Portraits

April 28th, 2011 § 0

Over the past few years, I’ve been volunteering to teach photography to 4th and 5th graders at a local public elementary school.  Normally, I show examples of a certain type of work (portraiture, abstract, landscape, etc.) and then cut them loose to shoot with digital cameras and we review their choices the following week.  The results never fail to impress me.

One week we set up a “mini studio” in a classroom and had the students shoot self-portraits.  They were allowed to shoot three portraits and selected their favorite.

Here are a few samples:

This is from a series I’ve been working on over the last few years.  I merged the top and bottom halves of various faces with often humorous and disturbing results.  This is one of the  “quartets” I created for a gallery show.  The interactive version can be found on my website under the “Stereotypes” header.
